Quick picks. Free and all-in-one: thinkorswim (Schwab). Low per-share costs and global markets: Interactive Brokers TWS. Built for shorting small caps with a low minimum: TradeZero ZeroPro. What actually matters for day trading
Most “best platform” lists rank on features nobody uses. For active stock trading, these are the things that change your results and your costs:
- Order speed and hotkeys. If you trade fast-moving stocks, clicking through order tickets costs you on every fill. Hotkeys let you buy, sell and cancel with one key.
- Level 2 and time and sales. Seeing the bids, asks and prints is how many intraday traders read a move.
- Short locates. Small caps that run are often hard to borrow. If you short, the broker’s locate supply decides whether you can take the trade at all.
- Real cost per month. Platform fee plus data plus commissions at your volume. A “$0 commission” broker is not always cheapest once you add data and fees, and a paid platform can be cheaper if its fee is waived at your volume.
- Account minimum. Some professional platforms need $5,000 to $30,000 to open.

It is the easiest way to get charts, scanners, scripting and order entry in one place for free. It is not a direct-access platform, so you do not choose your own order routes.

A note on TradingView

How to choose in three steps
- Start with your account size. Under $5,000, the professional platforms with high minimums are off the table. thinkorswim, Webull, IBKR and TradeZero are realistic.
- Decide whether you short. If you short small caps, locate access matters more than charts. Look at TradeZero and direct-access brokers like Cobra, Lightspeed and CenterPoint.
- Price it at your volume. Add platform fee, data and commissions for a normal month. Then practise on the simulator or paper account before you fund it.
Whatever you pick, log your trades from day one so you can see what the platform change actually did. Our free trading journal template works in Excel and Google Sheets.
